The transition deadlines for ISO 14001:2004 and ISO 9001:2008 are on the horizon. With in 9 months (by Sept 2018) the existing certificates will no longer be valid. The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) had announced that on or before 15th March 2018, the certification bodies must conduct all ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 audits to the 2015 versions in order to help the certified organizations to manage non-conformities before the Sept 2018 deadline. Many organizations had begun or even completed their recertification; but those who have not yet started their transition run the risk of losing their present certification. ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 will both cease by the mid Sept. 2018. Although there is no set time for transition, as the degree of needed change will depend upon how an organization had developed and uses its existing management system. It is important to give enough time to implement the new standards in the place of your existing management system. One of the most common traps observed are, companies are thinking that they have a long time thus leaving it to the last minute. Making changes in ISO 9001 2015 and ISO 14001:2015 will take a few weeks to set with organizational priorities. Also need to plan for an audit with the certification body, which can take time. So ensure to execute the process as early as possible. What is transition and how it affects your business?ISO 9001:2015 is the revised Quality Management System standard published in 2015 to replace ISO 9001:2008. All businesses seeking ISO 9001:2015 certification need to be audited in line with the new standard, failing which the organizations will have to apply afresh and wait indefinitely besides additional financial burden. Variance between older and new standards in nutshell• Approach to risk and awareness of the context which your business operates.• Meeting the stakeholders’ expectations.• Using the Process Approach.• Control of Outsourcing.Benefits with the new version• It puts greater emphasis on leadership engagement thus increasing satisfaction of customers and suppliers. These are the requirements of people to do business with you• It helps in addressing organisational risks and opportunities in a more structured manner (risk based thinking).• It uses simple language, terms and a common structure which are helpful to organisations using multiple management systems like environmental, health & safety, business continuity etc., • Also it addresses supply chain management more effectively.• Its terminology is more user-friendly for service and knowledge-based organisations.Smartedge team can help you in this regard to make the transition smoothly, along with Gap analysis, updating the documented information, inhouse trainings, practical implementation support, Internal audit, Supporting for preparing to Management Review and getting certified of the new standard finally. ISO 9001:2015ISO 9001:2015 sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is the only standard in the family that can be certified to (although this is not a requirement). It can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of activity. This standard is based on a number of quality management principles including a strong customer focus, the motivation and implication of top management, the process approach and continual improvement. Using ISO 9001:2015 helps ensure that customers get consistent, good quality of products and services, which can bring many business benefits.Certification to ISO 9001:2015Checking whether the system is working is a vital part of ISO 9001:2015 by regular internal audits. An organization may decide to invite an independent certification body to verify that it is in conformity to the standard. Alternatively, it can invite its clients to audit the quality system for themselves.Revision of existing ISO 9001:2008 standard:Organizations which are already certified with ISO 9001:2008 standard are permitted for a period of three years to migrate their quality management system to the new edition of the standard. Why ISO 9001:2008 was revised? All ISO standards are reviewed for every five years to establish if a revision is required to keep it current and relevant for the changing market needs. ISO 9001:2015 is designed to respond to the latest trends and be compatible with other management systems such as ISO 14001.What are the main changes in the standard? The new version follows a higher level structure to make it easier to use in conjunction with other management system standards, with increased importance given to risk. How to make the transition from ISO 9001:2008 revision to the 2015 revision? The new version of ISO 9001:2015, which was released in Sept. 2015. The Certified companies and organizations are willing to know the next steps, and how to become compliant with the new version.Transition PeriodThe ISO organization stated that the transition period will take three years. So the organizations may get their ISO 9001:2008 certificates or have surveillance audits according to the old version until September 23, 2018. Even though it is sufficient period, organizations can plan to catch up with the changes much sooner to demonstrate that they are keeping up with the world and gain a competitive advantage.Validity of the old certificates:The new standard was published on September 15, 2015, so the ISO 9001:2008 standard will become invalid by September 14, 2018. To avoid the pressure at the eleventh hour, organization are recommended to plan their transition at the earliest possible time frame. ISO 45001 is now publishedThe world’s much anticipated International Standard for occupational health and safety (OH& S) has just been published, and is set to transform workplace practices globally. ISO 45001:2018, Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use, provides a robust and effective set of processes for improving work safety in global supply chains. Designed to help organizations of all sizes and industries, the new International Standard is expected to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses around the world.According to 2017 calculations by the International Labour Organization (ILO), 2.78 million fatal accidents occur at work yearly. This means that, every day, almost 7 700 persons die of work-related diseases or injuries. Additionally, there are some 374 million non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses each year, many of these resulting in extended absences from work. This paints a sober picture of the modern workplace – one where workers can suffer serious consequences as a result of simply “doing their job”.ISO 45001 hopes to change that. It provides governmental agencies, industry and other affected stakeholders with effective, usable guidance for improving worker safety in countries around the world. By means of an easy-to-use framework, it can be applied to both captive and partner factories and production facilities, regardless of their location.David Smith, Chair of project committee ISO/PC 283 that developed ISO 45001, believes the new International Standard will be a real game changer for millions of workers: “It is hoped that ISO 45001 will lead to a major transformation in workplace practices and reduce the tragic toll of work-related accidents and illnesses across the globe.” The new standard will help organizations provide a safe and healthy work environment for workers and visitors by continually improving their OH& S performance.Smith adds: “World standards writers have come together to provide a framework for a safer workplace for all, whatever sector you work in and wherever you work in the world.” More than 70 countries were directly involved in the creation of this important document, developed by ISO/PC 283, Occupational health and safety management systems, with the British Standards Institution (BSI) serving as the committee secretariat.Because ISO 45001 is designed to integrate with other ISO management systems standards, ensuring a high level of compatibility with the new versions of ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO 14001 (environmental management), businesses that already implement an ISO standard will have a leg up if they decide to work toward ISO 45001.The new OH& S standard is based on the common elements found in all of ISO’s management systems standards and uses a simple Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) model, which provides a framework for organizations to plan what they need to put in place in order to minimize the risk of harm. The measures should address concerns that can lead to long-term health issues and absence from work, as well as those that give rise to accidents.ISO 45001 will replace OHSAS 18001, the world’s former reference for workplace health and safety. Organizations already certified to OHSAS 18001 will have three years to comply with the new ISO 45001 standard, although certification of conformity to ISO 45001 is not a requirement of the standard. The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) has developed the migration requirements to help certified organizations, certification bodies, accreditation bodies and other interested parties prepare. For more information, see the IAF Website.ISO 45001:2018 can be purchased from your national ISO member or through the ISO Store.
